Leading the way in Sustainability & Environmental Practices
What is sustainable fishing?
Sustainable fishing is where fish and other marine life are harvested at a sustainable rate, where the fish population does not decline over time because of fishing practices.
Sustainability in fisheries combines theoretical disciplines, such as the population dynamics of fisheries, with practical strategies, such as avoiding over-fishing through techniques such as individual fishing quotas, curtailing destructive and illegal fishing practices by lobbying for appropriate law and policy, setting up protected areas, restoring collapsed fisheries, incorporating all externalities involved in harvesting marine ecosystems into fishery economics, educating stakeholders and the wider public, and developing independent certification programs.
At Melbourne Seafood Market we understand the world is changing and how people choose to shop is changing with it for the better. That’s why our mission at Melbourne Seafood Market is to source our seafood from fishmongers and fisheries who practice sustainable fishing practices.
Since we have been operating we have seen the impact that commercial fishing has had on fish populations, the damage it has caused on marine life and its environment around the world. That is why we have decided to say no to fishmongers and fisheries that aren’t implementing or don’t practice sustainable fishing.
Cause if the shops you buy from do not take a stand now our seas will be empty!
